Mechanical Engineering

Throughout history, mechanical engineering has played a significant role in automated manufacturing, biomedical fields, computer fields, environmental control, transportation, and much more. Mechanical engineers are responsible for imagining and implementing programs and devices that improve our world. As such, the contributions of mechanical engineering to modern society are many and varied. Among them:

Agricultural mechanization: Mechanized equipment, courtesy of mechanical engineers, has almost entirely replaced human and animal power for farming tasks in developed nations.

Air conditioning and refrigeration: When mechanical engineers fully defined the relationships between air, water, and energy, and developed new, effective refrigerants, air conditioning became a practical, comfortable way of life.

Airplanes: Mechanical engineers design and build planes and are constantly improving aircraft performance, safety, and efficiency.

Apollo: Project Apollo, which produced the first vehicles for humans to visit another heavenly body, was a mechanical engineering triumph. The success of Apollo continues to inspire new visions for exploration.

Food processing: Mechanical engineers transformed food processing into a highly mechanized, economical industry that supplies safe, nutritious food to the world.

Ribbon machine: The ribbon machine, a marvel of mechanical engineering, is responsible for streamlining the process of manufacturing billions of light bulbs. Currently, fewer than 15 machines produce the world's entire supply of standard bulbs, which makes the ribbon machine one of the most effective industrial machines in history.
