Don't be fooled--computer science involves more than programming. It's a discipline that stresses the design, analysis, implementation, application, and management of large hardware and software systems.
A computer scientist does the work of architect--planning, designing, and organizing. A computer scientist is a builder, writing programs and building software systems. And a computer scientist is a consummate thinker, identifying quick fixes as well as the issues that will take more time to resolve.
Specifically, computer scientists study and build the chips, wires, and circuits that form the building blocks of computers. Computer scientists also study the Internet, the World Wide Web, and the set of rules and standards that make them work. Ultimately, computer scientists work to solve computing problems to determine ways to make computers work faster and better.
Accredited computer science programs offer coursework in hardware design, software design, programming, and more. Computer science programs also allow you to specialize in areas such as game design, graphics, microprocessor-based design, networking, operating systems, robotics, and Web-based systems. Computer science skills can even be applied outside computing careers, in fields such as bioinformatics, business and financial management, and law.
